Chinese Consortium to Construct International Airport in Mbarara District

MBARARA, UGANDA – In a move set to transform Western Uganda’s economic landscape, the government has given its full backing to a Chinese-led consortium to build and operate an international airport in Mbarara District. The project, which has received a presidential boost, is a key component of the government’s long-term strategy to enhance economic growth, tourism, and agriculture in the region.

The proposal was presented to President Yoweri Museveni at State House, Entebbe, by Base 7 Aviation International Academy and its consultants, Hamster Business Solutions. The project is structured under a Build, Operate, and Transfer (BOT) model, which will see the consortium handle the financing, construction, and initial operations before handing it over to the Ugandan government.

The consortium is composed of three key firms:

  • Hunan Construction and Investment Engineering Company: The lead firm for construction.
  • China Southwest Architectural Design and Research Institute: Responsible for the feasibility and design studies.
  • Blackrock Uwekeza: Will finance and operate the airport.

President Museveni expressed his full support for the project, describing it as a strategic initiative for the country. He emphasized the importance of the airport in boosting the economy, creating jobs, and facilitating regional and international trade. The president also urged the consortium to work closely with the government’s technical teams to finalize the project plans and ensure environmental preservation throughout the development process.

The new airport, located in Nyakisharara, is projected to be a major economic catalyst, with consultants suggesting it could significantly increase Uganda’s economic output. The airport is also expected to position Uganda as a new transit hub, linking Africa to global destinations in Latin America, China, Indonesia, and Australia. The construction is expected to be completed by 2030, aligning with the president’s development initiatives.
