KCCA Rolls Out 4 Trillion Shillings Plan to Fix Roads and Drainage

Kampala — The Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has unveiled a comprehensive 4 trillion shillings infrastructure plan aimed at overhauling the city’s road network and drainage systems. The initiative is part of the authority’s long-term strategy to reduce congestion, prevent flooding, and improve overall urban mobility in Uganda’s rapidly growing capital.

According to KCCA officials, the plan will target critical arteries, including Jinja Road, Entebbe Road, Yusuf Lule Road, and other high-traffic zones. The project also includes upgrading drainage channels, constructing new stormwater systems, and rehabilitating existing ones to mitigate perennial flooding during rainy seasons.

KCCA Executive Director Dorothy Kisaka emphasized the transformative potential of the initiative. “This investment will not only ease traffic congestion but also safeguard lives and property from flooding. Proper roads and drainage are key to sustainable urban development, and this plan demonstrates our commitment to building a modern and resilient Kampala,” she said.

The funding for the project will be sourced from a combination of government allocations, loans, and public-private partnerships. The authority has outlined a phased approach to minimize disruption, with priority given to the most congested and flood-prone areas. Traffic diversions and public notices will be deployed to ensure residents and commuters are informed in advance.

Urban planners and civil engineers have welcomed the initiative but caution that timely execution and proper maintenance are crucial for long-term success. They also highlighted the need for complementary measures, such as effective waste management and enforcement against illegal construction in drainage zones, to ensure the new systems function optimally.

Businesses and residents in affected areas have been advised to anticipate temporary disruptions but are encouraged to cooperate with authorities for the greater benefit of improved urban infrastructure. KCCA has pledged regular updates on progress and expects the project to significantly enhance Kampala’s livability, economic productivity, and resilience against climate-related challenges.
